According to the recent report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) , they are sending a warning to organisations in the UK that ransomware is becoming more and more costly to organizations more than ever before.
The types of ransomware attacks the report identified were ranging from the frequency of ransomware payouts to the impact COVID-19 has on malicious actors infiltrating a network. You may be asking, "Why is this attack still popular with the bad guys?". The answer is simple - the ransom victims are willing to pay is too good for them to pass up.
A section of the report states, "The more organisations that pay a ransom, the more acceptable the notion of paying a ransom to solve the problem becomes."
With the increase in Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS), it will even be easier for malicious actors with a low cybersecurity skill to infiltrate your organisation's network. Simply pay a small fee to the dark web and the bad guys have all the tools they need to use for their attacks. "Recent evidence suggesting that ransomware operators are on active recruitment drives for new talent are a concerning sign that the scale of the threat is still increasing," stated from the report.
As your users continue to work in a remote work environment, it's only going to get worse with cybercriminals taking advantage. New-school security awareness training can ensure your users are prepared to safely identify and report any suspicious activity.
