The Cost and Impact of Cybercrime Can Now Be Measured in a Single Minute

Cost and Impact of CybercrimeWith the number of threat actors growing rapidly, along with an increased frequency of attacks, RiskIQ has put together a sobering perspective of how cybercrime impacts us in just 60 seconds.

There are plenty of news stories about attacks, ransoms demanded and paid, downtime incurred, and overall impact to victim organizations. But sometimes those accounts seem to be a bit out of reach for some; millions of dollars, months of time, etc. all may make attacks feel like the newsworthy ones are the outliers and an attack on your organization will be far less impactful.

Security vendor RiskIQ has collected some of the industry’s best stats and combined them into a single infographic entitled, The 2021 Evil Internet Minute that put cyberattacks into perspective.

According to the infographic, the following happens in a single minute in 2021:

  • 613 new malicious domains are stood up
  • 648 total threats
  • $280K in cybersecurity spend
  • $1.8M lost to cybersecurity incidents

And that’s just what we’ve experienced to date. The proper assumption is that these numbers will only increase, as cybercriminal gangs are taking strides to improve their art and become more impactful in an effort to see a larger “return” on their malicious investment.

With email phishing still one of the primary initial attack vectors in most cyberattacks, it’s important to prop up an effective defense against the weakest part of your security strategy – your users. Using Security Awareness Training, organizations can put a stop to attacks that make their way past security solutions to the Inbox by educating users on how to identify impersonation attacks and other social engineering tactics that establish credibility and cause victim recipients to engage.

So, take a minute here and think about how you can improve your organization’s security stance. One well-spent minute could save your company time, money, and its’ reputation.
