New Research: Ransomware Incidents Spike 84% in 2023

ransomware-screen-lockNewly-released data covering cyberthreats experienced in 2023 sheds some light on how very different last year was and paints a picture of what to expect of cyber attacks in 2024.

As someone who looks a lot at industry data, I really want it to be as relevant as possible. But it’s also important to see the larger trends over the recent past to begin to predict what’s to come. But it’s also really important to see the larger trends over the recent past to begin to predict what’s to come.

Which is exactly what I’m seeing in NCC Group’s just-released Threat Monitor Report for 2023. According to their coverage of ransomware in 2023, there are some startling details:

  • The number of incidents jumped from 2,531 in 2022 to 4,667 in 2023 (and for context, 2022 saw a 5% decrease over 2021)
  • Every single month in 2023 was higher than its 2022 counterpart
  • The monthly mean number of attacks in 2023 was 389; in 2022, it was only 211

What is also concerning is the massive jump in attacks specifically on organizations in the “Software and IT Services” industry in the report, which saw a 146% increase in attacks.  This growth implies that your organization needs to be ready for both direct and indirect attacks.  A layered security strategy that includes security awareness training is warranted to include employees as part of the organization’s defenses.

From the looks of things, we should expect a lot more ransomware attacks this year. Now is the time to prepare.
