A new survey of hackers shows that AI is not only empowering hackers to be more effective, but that AI itself is “ripe for exploitation.”
Rarely do we get to ask a hacker “what do you think” when it comes to cyber attacks, cybersecurity efforts, and what they think the future will hold.
But Bugcrowd’s 2024 Inside the Mind of a Hacker Report (which surveyed 1300 hackers) hosts a treasure trove of data around how hackers see AI and the value it brings.
- 74% of hackers think AI has made hacking more accessible
- 86% believe AI has fundamentally changed their approach to hacking
- 77% use AI technologies to hack
These last two are REALLY important:
- 82% believe the AI threat landscape is evolving too fast to adequately secure
- 93% believe that orgs using AI tools have given hackers a new vector to exploit
These last two stats are underpinned by observed trends in something as simple as increases in “gpt” related scams, fake domains, and phishing attacks – all because of the rise in interest by organizations in using generative AI to accelerate their business.
As threat actors look for additional ways to take advantage of AI-centric attack vectors, it’s critical to realize that something as simple as a phishing email and an interest in GenAI on the part of the recipient victim could be all it takes to compromise credentials or infect endpoints – which is why organizations need to prepare their employees through security awareness training designed to keep them vigilant as they begin to explore using AI tools to augment their productivity.
