Microsoft Notifies 10,000 Customers About Nation-state Cyber Attacks

In an article about cyber security related to voting machines, an interesting snippet of information surfaced: “Microsoft said it has notified almost 10,000 customers in the past year that they've been targeted or compromised by nation-state cyberattacks. About 84 percent of the attacks targeted enterprise customers — generally at organizations — and about 16 percent targeted consumer personal email accounts, the company said.” here is the whole article:

The WSJ reported on the same event, and said: "Suspected nation-state hackers from Russia, Iran and elsewhere have launched nearly 800 cyberattacks against political organizations over the past year that have been detected by Microsoft, with the vast majority of the attempts targeting groups based in the U.S.

Think tanks and nongovernmental groups that work with candidates or political parties—or on issues important to their campaigns—have suffered most of the attacks. The assaults could be a precursor to direct attacks on campaigns and election systems, a trend in recent election cycles in the U.S. and Europe, Microsoft said Wednesday.

Note that the vast majority of these attacks are spear phishing and that employees at high-risk groups need to be stepped through new-school security awareness training.
