Japan's Largest Port is the Latest Victim of a Ransomware Attack

Japan Port RansomwareThe largest port in Japan, Nagoya, is now the most recent victim of a ransomware attack.

The attack impacts the operation of container terminals, as the port handles over two million containers each year. This port is also used by the Toyota Motor Corporation, one of the world’s largest automakers, to export most of its cars.

The notice of malfunction contained the following information, "Upon investigating the cause, we held a meeting with the Nagoya Port Operation Association Terminal Committee, who operates the system, and the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters [and] it was discovered that the issue was a ransomware infection.” — Nagoya Port

Until further notice, all container and unloading operations have been cancelled. This incident will cause massive financial losses to the port, as well as delay transfer of goods to and from Japan.

Like most cyber attacks, ransomware can be prevented through end-user education. New-school security awareness training can ensure your users are up to date on the latest security trends and can report any suspicious activity in their day-to-day operations.
