Despite the belief that today’s SOC should be doing the lion’s share of protecting an organization, new data shows reliance on more than just security teams is needed.
Many of our blogs have something to do with the increasing risk of cyber attacks. So, it’s natural to see that organizations are increasing cybersecurity budgets. But according to Red Canary’s 2024 Security Operations Trends Report, it might not be enough to address the evolving threat landscape.
According to the report, 63% of security leaders had an increase in their budget in the past twelve months. But only 37% feel the increase was enough to ensure their organization is secure. Let me analyze this data a bit: 37% of organizations didn’t increase their budgets and another 23% (that’s 37% of the 63% that did) of organizations don’t feel they’ve increased enough to be secure.
In total, 59% of organizations — through either scenario — aren’t fully prepared to address the threat landscape.
Red Canary make suggestions that include empowering your in-house security teams. But how about empowering your employees with security awareness training so they can help act as part of the organization’s defenses?
If budgets are tight and smart spending is on the agenda, defenses like security awareness training that focus on the primary means of initial access today — phishing and social engineering — just make sense.
