KnowBe4 is committed to sustainability and helping protect the environment, as evidenced by our initiatives such as our public commitment to sustainability, our planting trees and supporting local bee hives, and even our CEO Stu Sjouwerman’s donation of $2.5M to the Florida Wildlife Corridor.
More and more organizations are being asked about their accountability for their impact on the environment. Many organizations are being asked this through something called the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework by which many organizations are being evaluated rather than just profitability.
In other words, this framework asks what an organization's impact on the environment and society is as a whole rather than just how much money that it makes. A big part of all ESG programs is training, and KnowBe4 has developed training modules and supplemental materials to support your organization’s ESG efforts as part of our Compliance Plus library.
With yesterday being Earth Day, a day to focus on environmental issues that dates back to the 1960’s, I want to reflect on the “E” in ESG and tell you more about what training we have and are developing. I also want to take a moment to talk about the eLearning approach for training and its overall impact on the environment.

eLearning for a Better Environment
Aside from the individual modules we offer specifically about protecting the environment, the shift toward eLearning is one of our most significant contributions to environmental preservation. By leveraging online training, organizations eliminate the need for travel and reduce their carbon footprint, since instructors no longer have to journey extensively to deliver compliance and security sessions.
This modern approach also negates the necessity for printed materials. Furthermore, this method of delivering frequent, targeted, and year-round training has been found not only to be more efficacious but also a boon for the health of our planet through digital transformation.
The Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) found that online learning can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90%. eLearning can minimize greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the necessity for commuting and lowering energy consumption compared to traditional classroom settings.Transitioning to digital materials curtails the need for paper, conserving trees and reducing pollution from the paper production cycle. Online platforms allow for large-scale, flexible learning opportunities without the corresponding physical resource drain, as infrastructure expansion is not needed to accommodate more learners. Furthermore, eLearning promotes international collaboration without travel, leading to significant decreases in travel-related carbon footprints.
Whether you are using us for security or compliance training, the digital transformation that enables our eLearning solutions certainly protects organizations and makes our world a better place.
