Phishing for Gamers Uses A Fake Skin Giveaway

BleepingComputer warns that a fake Steam skin giveaway site is stealing users’ Steam credentials. The site appears to be running a 26-day promotion giving away free skins for Counter-Strike, and it has a running chat panel on the side of the page in which users appear to be discussing the promotion. Visitors are asked to login with their Steam account in order to claim their prize. Once the scammers have a victim’s credentials, they’ll generate a real Steam Guard notification to trick the victim into granting access to their account from an unrecognized browser.

If you’re not a gamer you may be unfamiliar with “skins.” A skin is a different look for a player’s character: mostly clothing, but also other aspects of the character’s appearance.

The site doesn’t actually give any skins away, and examining the source code of the site reveals that the chat messages are being generated by a JavaScript script. The site has already been flagged by Cloudflare as a suspected phishing site, but the attacker can easily move the scam to a different domain. Most Steam phishing schemes, including this one, are spread via comments on Steam itself, so users should beware of links offering free content.
