This blog was co-written by Joanna Huisman and Aimee Laycock. We have all seen an increase in the amount of advice and guidance from the healthcare sector and others since the start of the Coronavirus crisis. The latest recommendation I’ve heard is that washing your hands with antibacterial soap to the tune of “Happy Birthday” allows the right amount of time for disinfecting to take place. Amongst adults, washing our hands frequently is the normal, expected, and socially accepted response to a flu outbreak, but is that enough?

This blog was co-written by Joanna Huismann and Aimee Laycock. Communication is not always easy (let’s be honest, we have all wanted to scream with frustration at our partner or a family member at some point or other). In business, we often hear about the need for effective and efficient communication. But when it comes to the goal of changing security behaviors, what does that actually mean? And, how can it be achieved?

In today’s world, it’s essential to implement security awareness training in the workplace. Without security awareness training, how would your employees know how to stay safe?

It was an average Sunday…laundry, errands, football. I was standing in the checkout line at my favorite store, Target, when my son texted to remind me to get the Tostitos Scoop chips, he asked for which I of course forgot because I was already plotting out the trip to my next stop trying to circumvent the lazy Sunday drivers. So, out of line and back into the store to find the chips. Along the way, my phone was going off like the winner of a Las Vegas slot machine jackpot. While trying to navigate the aisles and all of the wreckless cart drivers (me included) I pulled out my phone to start scanning through the barrage of emails. Let’s start there, I am not a good scanner.

It’s similar to any organization if you really think about it. A group of individuals owning their part in moving something forward, making it work. When you apply this thinking to employees practicing secure behaviors, employees need to be fully aware and committed to their role in the protection of the organization and its information in order to understand their responsibilities.

What if the Santa’s Elves knew better?

By Joanna Huisman, KnowBe4's new SVP Strategic Insights & Research. It’s that time of the year again when children all over the world take pause to try and figure out which side of Santa’s list they will end up on…Naughty or Nice! I posed this question to my teenage sons the other day and although I am told they are “too old” to believe in Santa, they did stop for a moment to reflect on the year and determine if the amount of mischief they caused warranted that dreaded bag of coal.

You see, even though their age may automatically eliminate them from buying into the whole sleigh and reindeer stuff, their childish wonder still draws their eyes to the sky on Christmas Eve and leads them to write wish lists that compare in length to the Great Wall of China. I also lob the threat that those who do not “believe” in our home do not “receive”, that generally helps to get them into the holiday spirit.
